Handmade

A baker in a kitchen with shelves full of bread.

Some things take time: kneading dough, crafting a piece of wooden furniture, brewing beer, pressing grapes to make wine. This work cannot be fully automated. It thrives on people who know and love their craft. At the Industry Night, it is precisely these businesses that open their doors.

Local delicacies

At Sutter Begg on the Dreispitz site, we’re heading into the bakery: you’ll join the team on an exclusive tour, watch as delicious pastries are made, and have the chance to put your skills as a pastry chef to the test. Next door, also on the Dreispitz, is vinigma, an urban winery right in the heart of Basel. The grapes come from their own vineyards in Jenins, as well as from the Valais and the Basel region. During the Industry Night, the team will guide you through the production hall, where the wine is pressed, bottled and stored. The event concludes with a tasting session.

At the port in Birsfelden, Delica demonstrates how large quantities of coffee are produced and shipped every day. You can follow the flow of coffee on a guided tour of the facility and sample various blends from the CoffeeB system. For those looking for a job: Delica is showcasing 14 different apprenticeship roles, ranging from plant operator to food production assistant. At Volta Bräu, you can experience a craft with a long history: the company brews its craft beer in the former IWB substation in St. Johann, unfiltered and unpasteurised. Birtel also offers a glimpse into its brewery. At the Fahrbar, you can sample its delicious range.

The delicate scent of the forest

Tschudin Carpentry also promises a sensory journey. Here, you can experience wood with all your senses and discover just how versatile this material is. Young people interested in a career in carpentry should take a look at the apprenticeship academy. At Knörndel, you can build your own birdhouse. And at Götschi, the specialist shop for crafts and industry, you can familiarise yourself with tools, machinery and workwear – so that your next project at home is a complete success.

A diverse company

The Bürgerspital Basel (BSB) is taking part in the Industrienacht for the first time. On its campus on Friedrich Miescher-Strasse, the BSB runs its own joinery, a print shop, a production and technical department, and a catering service. At Industrienacht, you can explore the facilities on a self-guided tour, have your own T-shirt printed in the print shop, and enjoy the wonderful creations of the BSB catering service on the large loading bay.

Sites steeped in history

Some of the programme events take place on sites that have a history of their own and are currently being repurposed in a variety of ways. The Walzwerk in Münchenstein is a former industrial site, now brought to life by around 90 tenants from the worlds of crafts, art, design and catering. The Alti Papieri in Arlesheim was a paper mill, which has been redeveloped since 2021 as a cooperative for crafts and trade. At both venues, a variety of workplaces will open their doors during Industry Night, offering a glimpse into the productive repurposing of such sites.
