Connected to the world

Every day, countless container ships leave the port of Rotterdam. Some of them sail up the Rhine as far as Basel. At the Port of Switzerland in Kleinhüningen, the containers are loaded onto trains or lorries, rattle through the marshalling yard and finally reach their destination in Switzerland. Over 300 containers pass through our region’s ports every day – on time and reliably. At Industry Night, you can experience this logistical feat first-hand.

Grain silo, fireboat, ship simulator

At Rhenus Port Logistics in the Port of Kleinhüningen, grain is imported and stored on a large scale. Guess the different varieties and, with a bit of luck, win some great prizes. At Contargo, you can climb the tallest container crane in Switzerland, watch containers being loaded onto trains and ships from a height of over 20 metres, and experience terminal operations through VR glasses. Those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground can visit the container terminal at Swissterminal and operate an excavator themselves at Ultra-Brag. Hafenbahn Schweiz explains how over 50 kilometres of track within the port keep the network running smoothly. At Delica in the port of Birsfelden, visitors can tour Switzerland’s second-largest coffee roastery. And at Waser Entsorgung, the world of the circular economy comes to life.

On roads and railways

Felix Transport in Arlesheim offers practical insights into regional freight transport and shows what happens during the final leg of the journey between the transhipment point and the destination. If you want to know what lies beneath the tracks of Europe’s largest border station, SBB is the place to go. During Industry Night, Swiss Federal Railways will open the catacombs of Basel station for an exclusive guided tour – where it becomes clear: the station never sleeps. In the locomotive simulator, you can also put your skills to the test and take a virtual journey through Switzerland.

The Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe (BVB) carries over 300,000 passengers through the city of Basel every day. There’s a packed programme at the BVB site: you can visit the control centre, observe a network service accident simulation, watch tracks being machined with CNC milling machines in the workshop, and see heavy track-laying equipment up close.
